LL Cool J Responds to DJ Akademiks' Calling Hip-Hop Pioneers Dusty ...

After the internet personality called Hip-Hop pioneers "dusty," LL Cool J has a few choices words for DJ Akademiks.

James Todd Smith, a 54-year-old artist legally known, posted his views on Instagram on Wednesday (Sept. 21) and passionately addressed Akademiks in person, avoiding to enumerate any names in order to avoid getting lost in the hype.

"It came to my attention that a DJ — and I'm not going to say any names 'cause I don't believe it's necessary," Big Ellie confidently began. "A DJ said that a lot of the pioneers in Hip Hop, they're dusty or how can they be the person who invented Hip Hop if they don't have a lot of money?"

The founder of The Rock The Bells argued that one's worth in Hip-Hop isn't contingent on how much money they make. Miles Davis and John Coltrane were among the artists who were celebrated without making mention of their bank accounts.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer then described Hip-Hop's humble beginnings, a time when rappers and DJs didn't have much to deal with business-wise, yet still made it work, paving the way for others like Ak.

Cool J said: "When Hip Hop first began, there were no managers," and there were no accountants that believed in it. "Record companies didn't even believe in it. Nobody believed in it." How can you make a 5-year plan or a 10-year plan on something that doesn't yet exist?

The GOAT then addressed Akademiks and others who conflate cultural impact with money.

"I'm all about getting paper. I've been talking about it throughout my career." But don't ever, ever, misunderstand the importance of being wealthy with making a contribution to our culture. Don't ever, ever, ever, play yourself like that again!

LL's Instagram rant is in response to Akademiks ridiculing the culture's founding fathers, calling them "dusty" for not "living good."

“Have you ever seen any old rappers who are really living up to their reputation as Hip Hop founders?” Akademiks asked. “Those ni**as may be looking quite dirty. I kid you not. Don't try and come for me, 'cause I don't f**k with y'all ni**as.”
