EA has announced that AFC Richmond and its manager, Ted Lasso, will be included to FIFA 23 in one of the strangest decisions for a sporting game.
AFC Richmond will be available in FIFA Ultimate Team and Pro Clubs, as well as in Career Mode, Kick-Off, Online Friendlies, and the Online Seasons mode. Roy Kent, Jamie Tartt, Sam Obisanya, and Dani Rojas will also be included in the Greyhounds' squad, as well as the home stadium of Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park.
Ted Lasso is the leading character in the popular Apple TV+ series AFC Richmond, despite only having previously coached in junior American Football and ended up in several viral online videos. The series follows Lasso as he overcomes every obstacle and challenge he faces in figuring out how to win football matches.
"It's super cool to be in FIFA." Brett Goldstein, who plays AFC Richmond player Roy Kent, said. "I'm hoping to win a game with my nephew as Roy Kent and him as Jamie Tartt."
I'm unsure if this is a character or not.
Ted Lasso is currently on Apple TV+ for two seasons, with season 3 being set to be the last. No official date has been given on when it might be released, but there are indications that filming hasn't yet finished due to script rewrites and stop-start shooting, so it's unlikely to fall to 2023.
FIFA 23, on the other hand, has a given release date. It will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Stadia, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 30th, with early access for the Ultimate Edition on 27th September.
