Tomohiko Ito, the director of Aniplex, has released his first manga, titled Wonder X, with the artist Mekki Kuroyama. The manga is being serialized on Kadokawa's Comic Newtype platform. (The group was founded in 2016 with the intention of focusing on anime scripts), while Kuroyama is the artist.

The plot of Tomohiko Ito and Mekki Kuroyama's Wonder X manga is set in the early 1990s and follows a group of children who meet a strange being in October's issue of the Newtype magazine.

Tomohiko Ito is best known for his roles in A-1 Pictures' Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online II. Erased was his first directorial debut, alongside The Millionaire Detective Balance: Unlimited and Occult Academy. He directed two Sword Art Online films, Extra Edition and Ordinal Scale, and Hello World (with a screenplay by Mado Nozaki).

Mekki Kuroyama wrote and illustrated the manga adaptation Amnesia Joker, and has also worked as an artist for Isekaigaeri no Moto Yuusha Desu ga, the Death Game, and the Makikomaremashita manga.
