An Asteroid The Size Of Two Statues Of Liberty Is Approaching Earth
In the next few days, the "potentially dangerous" asteroid, which is more than twice the size of the Statue of Liberty, will come as close to Earth as possible, according to the Express edition with reference to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory).
It is worth noting that the space object with the designation 441987 (2010 NY65) with a length of 187 meters is moving at a speed of 13.4 kilometers per second or more than 48,000 kilometers per hour.
According to calculations, the asteroid will reach its maximum point on June 25, on this day, it will be at a distance 15 times greater than the distance from the Earth to the Moon. This indicator allows you to include the object in the list of potential threats, but astrophysicists have warned that it is unlikely to crash into our planet this time; although it may happen in a few centuries.
441987 (2010 NY65) was discovered in 2010 and has come close to Earth several times. The next convergence is expected in 2022.
This asteroid is of particular interest to scientists because it provides an opportunity to study in detail the so-called "Yarkovsky effect" - a force that can knock a space object off course, it occurs when the rock is heated by direct sunlight and cools, releasing radiation from the surface.
