Who has the control under Her Control? ...

This review of Netflix film Under Her Control does not contain spoilers.

Sofa (Cumelen Sanz), an ambitious fashion employee, falls pregnant without wanting to. Beatriz (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), a close confidant of Sofa, proposes to her that she adopt her child in exchange, and she may continue her career.

On the other hand, Sofa is an opportunist, she doesn't know what she wants, but she knows how to improve herself. This leads to a whirlwind of issues between Beatriz and Sofa.

Sofa is eager to learn and will do anything for Beatriz from the moment she goes to the interview. She is content with her boyfriend Nacho and her new job with Beatriz. She is pleasantly surprised by how well her life is going. Until she discovers she is pregnant.

Sofa is unsure what she will do next. Does she have the baby and keep her dream job? Does she give the baby up for adoption? Does she intend on having an abortion? Eventually, when she hears another woman talking about how difficult it is to work and be a single mother, she falls in love and Beatriz vows to be there for her.

Their relationship seems to be a little tense throughout the film. Maybe that's how Beatriz wanted to take her into her world of fashion. It just didn't feel right considering how the narrative ends. Beatriz suggests that she will adopt Sofa's baby.

However, things aren't that easy. No one can know that Sofa is expecting a child, especially her boyfriend. It's also illegal for someone to give the baby to another person without filing it through the system. So Beatriz suggests that Sofa stay with her until the baby arrives and in return, give her financial stability and have her as a partner in the company.

Sofa's hormones get the better of her. She is locked in the house and she discovers that Beatriz is watching her. Little things spiral into bigger problems and the two of them have a power struggle before the baby is due. Beatriz loses her control over Sofa and ultimately loses herself.

What begins as a sleek and sexy drama blossoms into a Stockholm syndrome nightmare in the end. Beatriz is too controlling and wants everything to go smoothly in her life, so she even controlled Sofa's pregnancy. Once Sofa discovers some disturbing facts about Beatriz while she's home alone, she starts to detach from the person she assumed she knew.

The third act sees everything come to fruition and we see a little more of what Beatriz is capable of. The power shifts and we see two very different women figure out how they're going to proceed after this pregnancy. Their dynamic was interesting to watch and that conclusion was quite unexpected.
