The New-Vehicle Prices are rising to record highs for Fifth Straight Month, According to Kelley Blue Book

The new report shows new-vehicle prices hit another all-time high in August 2021. This is the fifth consecutive year's record-setting month. At $43,355, the average transaction price for a new vehicle increased nearly 10% ($3,789) from one year ago in August 2020 and 1,6% ($685) from July 2021.

The four-month period of the year ended with a slow sales pace, but the price-high prices continued to lead to the month's continued slowdown. The pace of automobile sales slowed in August 2021 after a frenzy of strong sales in the spring, and the car shoppers faced limited inventory, high prices and historically low incentives. Since the global COVID pandemic shut down U.S. businesses in april 2016, total sales numbered just 1,092,302 last month, the lowest monthly total in the last decade.

Continuing spending continued to fall, dropping to 5.6% of ATP last month, a drop from 5.9% in July 2021 and well below 10.1% of the tenth of an ethanol recorded in August 2020. Last month, the number of incentive spends by the people who did not pay for cars, was less than 4% of ATP. On the other hand, Alfa Romeo, Buick and Infiniti each had incentive levels at more than double the industry average.

"The automotive industry is still reeling from the extraordinary circumstances of the last two years, with new records seemingly left and right," said Kayla Reynolds, an analyst for Cox Automotive. "With the ongoing inventory challenges that auto manufacturers face across the board, coupled with the historically low incentive spending, car shoppers end up being the ones paying the price quite literally. New-car prices are still falling month by month.

ATPs in August were driven in part by a strong luxury car sales. Luxury sales accounted for 16.2 % of the total market, up from 14.4 p.m. total sales in August 2020. Last month, the average price of a luxury car was 58.766 dollars. Moreover, many luxury brands, including Acura, Cadillac, Genesis and Mercedes-Benz, achieved year-over-year ATP gains in excess of 20. Cadillac, for example saw ATPs increase more than 32% last month, reaching $74,332. The consumer continues to pay nearly $100,000 for a new Cadillac Escalade, and more than 2,000 new Escalades sold in August.

Prices for the transaction slid year-over-year for Porsche, Fiat and EVs.

Nearly every brand saw year-over-year price gains last month, with exception being Fiat and Porsche. Porsche continues to deliver the industry's highest ATPs, at $96,344 in August, but saw prices fall marginally (less than one%) on the most expensive sports cars, the 911 and Taycan. Porsche incentives, as measured in relation to ATP, are the lowest in the industry, too.

While Porsche occupies the ATP penthouse, Fiat lives on the other side of the scales, selling the most affordable vehicles on offer. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for a new Fiat last month was less than $27,000, its lowest in the industry. Fiat ATPs fell 5% from August 2020, and the brand only sold 128 units last month.

Notably, electric vehicles prices fell year-over-year in August. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Volkswagen's ID.4 helped drive down average electric vehicles prices from 557,346 to 449,938 year-over-year. Even the hyper-expensive Porsche Taycan was less hyper hyperpensively in August 2021. The average buyer of the Porsche super electric was paying 152 509 dollars ago. Last month, the ATP fell to $123,371, a drop of 19% year-over-year. The Tesla Model Y, the best-selling EV in the United States, rose 37% year-over-year in August with an ATP of $58,966.
