Brittney Griner has been sentenced to nine years in Russian prison ...

Brittney Griner's case had been pending for months in a Russian court of law. The case has now been decided by the court, and her punishment is severe.

Brittney Griner confessed for the mistake I made and asked the judge for leniency in a Russian court on Thursday. Griner apologized again in her drug case, telling the Moscow jury that she was extremely sorry for accidentally bringing hashish oil in her suitcase in mid-February.

I want to apologize to my teammates, my club, my supporters, and the city of [Yekaterinburg] for my failure and the misery I caused on them.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to my parents, my siblings, the Phoenix Mercury organization back home, the wonderful women of the WNBA, and my wonderful spouse back home.

Griner, who was dressed in a grey T-shirt and dark jeans, appeared to be disgruntled when apologizing, according to Associated Press reporters on the scene. She later appealed to the court to remain polite with her when her sentence is handed down, adding that she hopes the decision will not end my life.

Prosecutors, on the other hand, reportedly argued in court on Thursday that Griner brought the cannabis oil on purpose and that the judge should sentence him to 9.5 years in prison. They also argue that Griner should be punished harshly.

Griner was previously identified as being convicted of narcotics charges last month. She may be sentenced to ten years in prison. Meanwhile, US officials have classed her as wrongfully detained and have revealed that they have offered to bring her back.

Griner was found guilty of the charges against her by a Russian court. She was not only sentenced to nine years in prison, but she was also fined 1 million rubles, or $16,300. She will be able to file an appeal.

Griner will likely not serve his entire term. US and Russian officials are apparently considering involving a Russian arms dealer known as The Merchant of Death in a prisoner exchange. Donald Trump has thrown a hole in this assumption.

President Joe Biden has just condemned the decision, declaring it to be unacceptable, and promising to do everything in his power to bring Griner home as quickly as possible.

I urge Russia to release her as soon as possible so she may be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and coworkers.

My administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every opportunity to have Brittney and Paul Whelan returned safely as soon as possible.
