I've read The Harry Potter Books 30+ times, and this plot hole haunts me ...

My most intrusive 3 a.m./shower thoughts as a lifelong Harry Potter nerd and unofficial Wizarding World expert are related to the books. Having read the series over 30 times (about twice a year since I was 16), Ive basically memorized all eight books. The blessing part comes when I am playing Harry Potter trivia and the curse is when I discover an obscure plot hole that will haunt me to my grave.

Though I have identified a fair amount of holes in the intricate tapestry [name redacted] invented (why did Hagrid not receive his wand back after he was proven innocent? Why did the Order just violate the prophecy? Why could Kreacher not destroy Voldemorts' locket?

If you aren't a raging super-nerd, like I am, then please allow me to explain. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry, Ron, and Hermione begin their quest for Horcruxes. Eventually, the quest leads them to 12 Gimmauld Place, where Kreacher, the Black family's house-elf, tells them of the torture he suffered decades before.

Regulus Black (brother of Sirius) told Kreacher that the Dark Lord required a house-elf for some top-secret endeavor, and he had to be that elf. Kreacher was instructed to assist Voldemort in accomplishing a task then returning, so he accompanied him to a cave by the sea. There, the elf was forced to drink a potion that burned his insides and made him see terrible things. He was rescued by Disapparating home.

After hearing the tale, Harry is surprised that Kreacher could leave the Voldemorts sanctum so easily, as wizards cannot Appear or Disapparate within the walls; thus Kreacher came home. Put simply, elf magic is not limited to wizards; they can perform almost any kind of magic as instructed by their master.

Kreacher claims that Regulus ordered him to destroy the locket in the same conversation, and that even though Kreacher performed many powerful spells, he could not destroy or open it. BOOM. Plot hole. Kreacher should have been able to destroy the locket with his own brand of magic (not to mention, he should have Disapparated with Regulus so he wouldnt have to die for the cause).

*Pauses to let that sink in.* Now, you too will be haunted by this disturbing discrepancy. Dont say I didnt warn you.
