Modern Bluetooth headphones have excellent sound quality due to new wireless standards and high-quality Bluetooth codecs. At the same time, they are flexible, have powerful ANC to reduce ambient noise, and are packed with smart features.

Here's where we begin: with a buying guide for Bluetooth headphones.

What you should look for when buying Bluetooth headphones is outlined in this buying guide.

Let's take a step back: Which headphone design is right for you? In this article, we'll focus on headphones that cover your ear as over-ear headphones. This provides better sound insulation and enhanced wear comfort. At the same time, over-ear headphones are quite large and can make your ears feel warm in the summer after wearing it for a long time.

In 2022, on-ear headphones will be relatively rare, but they do have advantages due to their small size. In return, they are inferior to other types in terms of sound and ANC effectiveness. Bluetooth headphones are particularly compact, and can even fit in a pocket in most cases. However, the wearing experience can be unpleasant in the long run.

When it comes to over-ear headphones, you can expect great sound quality thanks to large drivers and excellent passive noise isolation. As a rule of thumb, the more money you spend, the better sound quality the end result.

One of the major issues is the size and material selection of the drivers, the frequency response, and the use of high-quality Bluetooth codecs. Nevertheless, this has never been feasible in the technology market or reading review articles that detail the sound quality. You may also tweak the sound to your tastes via equalizers and sound profiles in companion apps.

Most Bluetooth headphones have active noise cancellation, abbreviated as ANC. Here, the headphones detect ambient noise through their microphones and play it back in your ear in reverse polarity. The so-called anti-noise cancellation compensates for the surrounding noise and you no longer hear it.

The ANC level can be controlled in a flexible manner, even completely automatically as an ideal, and there should also be a transparency mode. This allows you to hear ambient noise without the use of microphones, which is very handy in the midst of traffic or during conversations.

Another advantage over true-wireless headphones is the extended battery life, which is often several days long, with active noise cancellation. The small in-ear headphones last about one working day without additional charging in the charging cradle when buying a new pair of headphones.

Another useful feature to include is support for Quick-Charging and the possibility to use the headphones as a wired opton even when you are running on an empty battery. This information is usually found in reviews and on the manufacturer's website.

In 2022, headphones will no longer just be used for music, but there will be some new and exciting smart features. Sony's WH-1000XM5, for example, can select how powerful the ANC will be based on your movement patterns. Apple, on the other hand, created a stir with the introduction of their AirPods Max with realistic spatial audio.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is a bit expensive at the start. Fortunately, Sony's top headphones are industry leaders in several areas. First and foremost is ANC, which not only responds intelligently to your surroundings, but also works particularly effectively thanks to its very own V1 ANC chip. The sound quality is also excellent and the headphones support the high-quality Bluetooth codec LDAC.

Sony has come up with a new look that is a bit more stylish and rounder in 2022. Antoine's experience with the WH-1000XM5 convinced him.

The AirPods Max are a premium over-ear headphones from the company, which comes with an ultra-high-quality finish together with a metal casing, allowing for exceptional sound quality and automatic recognition of which Apple device you are currently using for listening to music or podcasts.

The AirPods Max are now available for purchase.

The AirTag's crown on the right side was borrowed from the Apple Watch. Moreover, the headphones are as usual seamlessly connected to the Apple ecosystem. This means you can connect them to your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and other Apple devices with ease. However, an H1 chip for precise tracking is lacking.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 is the predecessor to what we believe to be the best Bluetooth headphones on the market. After a decent price decrease, the headphones are now highly recommended in the price-to-performance range.

If over-ear headphones are not for you, we recommend the Marshall Major IV. There is a review of another model from the company's stables, the Marshall Monitor II. In addition, I have personally used the Marshall Major III for years and was especially impressed by the durableness of the headphones. Only one of the two ear cups ever popped out, but it may be reconnected when reconnected.

When it comes to hardware specifications, the Marshall Major IV is based on a similarly robust structure, which is made of metal and plastic. Another plus is the ability to connect the headset to a wired headphones even when the battery is running low.

The Soundcore Life Q35, a replacement for the Soundcore Life QC 30, which we also reviewed, is now available for $130 on Amazon. You can expect excellent ANC performance, excellent sound quality, and, above all, a very good companion app.

This is your key for precisely optimizing the sound quality, which is enjoyable after adjusting the equalizers. The battery life is particularly long, lasting up to 60 hours, and there are also important smart features such as multi-pairing and wear detection. So, if you don't want to rely on high-quality audio brands and are looking for a cheap alternative, you'll be pleased.

Alternatives to Bluetooth headphone systems

Due to the sheer number of available options, the Bluetooth headphone market is quite competitive. Although we won't go into details here, there are still some alternatives you can try out, some of which we have already reviewed in the editorial office.
